7 Things to do in the Gili Islands

The Gili Islands (Trawangan, Meno and Air) form an archipelago of white sands and turquoise blue waters islands located off the northwest coast of Lombok, Indonesia. Their idyllic beaches, dreamy sunsets and island vibes make every visitor fall in love with the Gilis.

Although in recent years tourism has grown enormously in this archipelago, there is still a hippie vibe in the Gilis. The fact that no cars or motorcycles are allowed on the islands and the only way to get around is by walking, bicycle or horse-drawn carriages called “cidomo”, makes the atmosphere on the Gili islands totally relaxed.

Check out the best things to do in these three Gili islands!

  1. Enjoy the Beaches

The beaches of the Gili Islands are the true tropical paradise. Long stretches of white sand beaches with turquoise blue waters. Even the beaches closest to the port and hotels are amazing.

The only thing you have to take into account are the times of the tides. At high tide you can enjoy the beaches in all their splendor. Shallow waters and beautiful colors. However, when the tide is low, the water goes further offshore, exposing hundreds of meters of marshy land.

  1. Rent a Bike

Cycling around the islands is a delight, as well as being the best way to get around, as there are no motorized vehicles and the islands are very small.

It is very easy and not expensive to rent a bike anywhere on the islands. Give preference to bikes with wider tires as they are better for riding on sand near beaches or in areas that are not paved.

At night, the lighting on the dirt streets is not the best, so it is worth trying to rent a bicycle with a basket to carry your things (such as a snorkel or bag). Also, consider getting a headlamp if you are planning to ride when it’s dark.

  1. Eat at Small Local Establishments

Perhaps the western looking restaurants owned by foreigners seem more inviting at first glance. However, consider trying the typical dishes from the local restaurants. This is a great way to absorb the local culture and support the local businesses .

At these restaurants you can taste from the most typical dishes of Indonesian cuisine such as Nasi Goreng or Nasi Campur, to all kinds of seafood and fresh fishes of the day.

  1. Scuba Diving

One of the highlights in the Gili Islands is diving. The water visibility is very good and the abundant marine life makes the Gili Islands an incredible destination for diving enthusiasts. Get ready to see lionfish, turtles, rays, octopus, sharks, shipwrecks, colorful corals, very exotic starfish and many more.

There are several companies on all three islands offering dives at various spots (about 30 in total).

  1. Snorkeling

If you don’t want to venture into scuba diving, you still can see the marine wildlife with a mask and snorkel. You can opt for a private boat if you are in a larger group, or join another group for a departure from a dive center. Half-day packages normally include snorkeling spots on the three islands – “three-island snorkel trip”, plus a stop for lunch. It’s really worth it!

Other than seeing the abundant marine life, there are also several underwater sculptures, and one of the most famous is on Gili Meno, called The Nest. The sculpture is located in front of the luxurious (and sustainable) BASK resort, and consists of 48 statues made with molds of real people, in life size and positioned in a circle, a few meters deep. The main idea is that they become artificial coral reefs.

Another famous spot for snorkeling is the scooters stuck on the seabed, which are located in Gili Trawangan, in front of the pier of the Vila Ombak hotel. In the vicinity of the scooters there are also several other submerged metallic structures with the purpose of creating artificial reefs.

  1. Swim with Turtles

The Gili Islands are famous for their turtle populations. In fact, Gili Trawangan and Gili Meno have sanctuaries on their main beaches. But it is possible to see them, with a little luck, while snorkeling.

Just, please, respect the animals in their natural habitat, don’t follow or surround the turtles, because when they get scared they swim to the depths in fear and don’t come back to the surface to breathe.

  1. Surf and other Water Sports

For surfing lovers, it’s good to warn you that the Gili islands don’t have waves as good and famous as those in Bali. But south of Gili Trawangan is the best spot if you plan on surfing – or at least take some lessons and try to stand on the board. There are even some surf camps in Gili Trawangan that include yoga practices, all meals, along with the surf lessons.

Other water sports include fishing, parasailing, water skiing… almost everything in terms of water sports can be practiced here. Choose your activity and enjoy!
